Default Susan Polgar won the 2003 US Open Blitz Championship!

I am not a tournament director, so perhaps one would be so kind as to
explain something to me that seems unusual. I am speaking of the
pairings from the US Open Blitz tournament. In particular, I am
referring to the final 2 rounds.

In the tournament, the two co-leaders played each other in the fourth
round, Zsuzsa Polgar and Alex Wojtkiewicz. They split the games and
dropped to 2nd place, behind IM Khachiyan, who had 7.5/8. But from
that point on, the pairings in the tournament were heavily against
Wojtkiewicz.

In the final 2 rounds, Alex was paired against the 9th (USCF 2505) and
3rd (USCF 2563) seeds in the tournament, with an average USCF rating
of 2534. He scored an impressive 3.5/4 in the final 2 rounds, for a
total score of 10.5/12.0.

In the final 2 rounds, Zsuzsa was paired against the 17th (USCF 2270)
and 19th (USCF 2224) seeds in the tournament, with an average USCF
rating of 2247. She scored a perfect 4.0/4.0 in the final 2 rounds,
for a total score of 11.0/12.0 and won the Championship

It just seems strange that both of Alex's opponents in the final
rounds were rated, on average, 300 points higher than Zsuzsa's
opponents.

Is that normal?

4-time Women's World Champion Susan Polgar has just won the 2003 US
Open Blitz Championship with the score of 11-1. The tournament has 6
GMs (Ehlvest, Wojtkiewicz, Polgar, Browne, Sharavdorj & Blatny) and
many other IMs, FMs, Senior Masters and Masters. This is one of the
strongest US Open Blitz Championship in recent history. The only loss
(by 1 second) she had was when she split 1-1 against GM Wojtkiewicz in
round 4. Wojtkiewicz finished 2nd with 10.5-1.5. 5 players were tied
at a distant 9-3 including GM Walter Browne. The tournament is WBCA
rated.

Taking into consideration the similar ELO ratings of the both players (i.e.
Alex and Zsuzsa) it`s not normal.
But maybe their USCF ratings differ more ?

I guess they were using USCF- Wojtkiewicz is 2652 on the last supplement,
Polgar is 2546.

So taking heed of the rating gap the pairing was quite normal.

Hard to say. Why don't you post the entire crosstable, so we can examine
all the ramifications of the various pairings and suggested pairings?

Going into round 5, there were one player with 7.5 and three with 7.0. So,
the lowest 7.5 should be paired against the highest 7.0, i.e. Khachiyan
should play Alex. The remaining two 7.0s should then be paired against each
other, i.e. Zsuzsa should play Elliott Neff. In both cases, that's exactly
what happened.

Going into round 6, there were two players with 9.0, one with 8.5, and two
with 8.0. The two with 9.0 had already played each other, so the
higher-rated 9.0 should be paired against the highest-scoring opponent
available, the 8.5. The remaining 9.0 should then be paired against the
highest-scoring opponent still remaining, i.e. the higher-rated of the two
with 8.0. Again, this is exactly what happened.

So the pairings were correct. If Zsuzsa caught a break, well, that's the
way the Swiss System works sometimes. It certainly wasn't due to fudged
pairings by the organizers.
