" . . . There are nearly 2,000 USCF-affiliated chess clubs, and more than
100,000 chess players participate in USCF events every year. The USCF

sanctions
thousands of chess tournaments with a half-million rated games each year."

Do any astute USCF-watchers know what's wrong with the description above?

What hyperbole!

Just gilding the lily. Kinda like saying this suit'll wear like iron.
Article 2 of the Uniform Commercial Code even defines and blesses puffery.

A more plausible explanation is that this was written by the same
person who embellished George DeFeis' resume.

George,

For starters the 100,000 claim has got to be wrong. They must be
counting a guy who plays in seven tournaments as seven chessplayers.

Larry

No different than baseball stats. "2 Million attended the ballpark this

year."

So, apparently chess players are so changed by the experience of playing in
a tournament that they are no longer the same person.....

At least as much as a Chicagoan watching both the Cubs and the Sox battling for
first in August.
