Default A Life for Hungary Memoirs of Admiral Nicholas Horthy Regentof Hungary

Horthy cannot be entirely blamed for these setbacks. As Nicholas

than it did.

Yes & no. He did what he could but IMHO it was with an unnecessary
political slant (more than could be paid for). Seeing an opportunity to
break out of the soviet block in '56 Imre Nagy had the right idea to
declare the country neutral. That should still be the path to follow.
When you're such a small country all you can expect to rock is a paper
boat in the bathtub even if you're an admiral, or take it all in stride
while fronts come and go like many european farmers did: "today it's
germans tomorrow it's russians, after tomorrow both will be dead but my
wheat will still be ready to harvest".

Otherwise it seems almost as interesting as my grandfather's accounts,
he'd been conscripted for both wars.

Free translation:
The Hungarian nation cannot afford peace at any cost,
only truth and freedom at any cost, and only then comes
because only then may come peace, when at long last we
dictate the conditions.
